HP Pavilion m7667c irritating beep-won't boot

I noticed this morning that the machine appears to be running -- but it is unresponsive -- the monitor is black, though the power lights on the unit are all on and the fans are running. It beeps, beeps, beeps in a constant pattern. The CD and DVD drives will respond (open and close), but nothing...
