Article Submission question

If I am to submit articles taken off of my site to article sites, will Google penalize me for having duplicate content? I am just wondering whether it is in my best interest to take all my content and to add it to article submission sites, so as to receive a number of back links. Would you say this is worthwhile if it is well written work?
