Battery not working on Acer Aspire 5920 laptop

Hi All I have a friends laptop, that will not run with out the power supply connected. I have tried a new battery with the same result. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to cure this problem? My thoughts are that there is maybe a problem with the mother board. It is 18 months old.
