WMP 9 playState Slow to Update

I'm writing an MP3 player (been writing it off and on for 10 years), using the WMP control in VB6. Up until now, I've been using ver. 6.4 - Now I'm upgrading to (I think) ver. 9. I have a timer that checks the control's playState property, and grabs the next song from a listbox when playState does...
