Acer laptop freezing up

My boyfriend's laptop keeps freezing up after only a few minutes use. He's tried defragmenting, scanned for viruses, taken the battery out and disk cleanup. Everything short of throwing it against the wall. It's and Acer Aspire 5610. Any help out there???
