Cataloging......is it need?

Hi everyone, Recently I've started cataloging of my forum. But at now I'm wondering is it needed? I heard that cataloging is obsolete, and SEO is not helping in it. What do you think about it?Is adding catalouges giving me anything? If yes is there any other benefits?
