Having as much information as possible about your market niche is a good starting point, as is realizing that making a successful business involves risk and a LOT of hard work.
Writing a detailed business plan with realistic revenue and expense projections (and how you will reach them) is very important. It's not as easy as just saying "we will sell lots and then be rich"
