For me, the very first thing you should do before you build your own business is to study everything related to it. If it is practical or a need by most consumers, study and research also if it is a unique business with lesser competition. Research and Planning always comes first.

Having as much information as possible about your market niche is a good starting point, as is realizing that making a successful business involves risk and a LOT of hard work.

Writing a detailed business plan with realistic revenue and expense projections (and how you will reach them) is very important. It's not as easy as just saying "we will sell lots and then be rich"
